SCANTEAK launches PROLOGUE!
13 December 2012
We've successfully launched our first-ever Designer Range, PROLOGUE!
.jpg)
The new Prologue collection is the result of a 2-year journey of extensive R&D and tedious prototyping. Launched at Isetan Scotts on 7 Dec 2012, the Prologue collection has received positive feedback and many queries from media and customers alike! Pictures of our Launch Event are available for viewing on our Facebook album (PROLOGUE Launch). The event was graced by esteemed guests, such as:
- His Excellency, Yoichi Suzuki, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of Singapore, Embassy of Japan in Singapore
- Mr Ted Tan, Deputy CEO, SPRING Singapore
- Mr Jeffrey Ho, Executive Director, DesignSingapore Council
- Mr Lim Tien Chun, Managing Director, Isetan (Singapore) Limited.
Other highlights of the event included the presentation of a S$100,000 cheque, from Scanteak's MD, Mr Lim Pok Chin and Isetan's MD, Mr Lim Tien Chun, to His Excellency, Yoichi Suzuki, who received it on behalf of the Singapore Red Cross Society. The cheque was a pledge of the first S$100,000 worth of sales from the Prologue collection, to the Japan Disaster Relief Fund.
Why the Japan Disaster Relief Fund?
The answer lies in the R&D, and the idea behind Prologue.
Scanteak saw that there was a market trend for more design-savvy products, as well as a growing need for creative solution to smaller living spaces. And there was no better role model for this than Japan. Our design partners for Prologue, Outofstock Design, then spent time in Japan researching lifestyles, habits and preferences of the Japanese market, and all this was amidst the recent Earthquake and Tsunami crisis. Wanting to give tribute to the country that inspired the Prologue collection, Scanteak has pledged the first fruits of Prologue sales to help the rebuilding efforts in Japan.
What's so special about Prologue?
The difference is in the design story, and keeping true to it.
The Outofstock team found that in Japan, due to the smaller living spaces, larger, chunky furniture would make apartments look cluttered. To avoid the claustrophic effect, most Japanese homes would keep their furniture minimal, lithe and sleek. Keeping furniture designs thin and minimal would then make a home look more spacious, and hence more comfortable. Being mindful of budget, and valuing the furniture they keep at home, Japanese families like to find ways to make their home pieces look brand new, according to preference, or even according to the season. Hence, the Outofstock team devised a clever way of changing the look and feel of certain pieces, though the use of cushion fabrics, in colours not usually available for other Scanteak pieces.
Normally, during product development, it's a common practice to include an additional strip of wood, or an additional support beam, to ensure that all products are stable and durable. However, with Prologue, challenge met was to keep each piece as stable and durable as every other Scanteak piece, while staying true to the designers' initial designs. It was tough, but we are proud to have achieved that balance.
Who are Outofstock?
Our design partners for the Prologue collection, Outofstock Design is a collective of international award-winning designers, based in Singapore.
Outofstock is a design collective, born out of a fortuitous meeting in Stockholm, hence the name Outofstock. Gabriel Tan and Wendy Chua from Singapore, Gustavo Maggio from Argentina and Sebastián Alberdi from Spain met at Electrolux Design Lab 2005. They connected, kept in touch, and after a reunion in 2006, decided to collaborate. This collaboration grew into an integrated studio offering interior and product design services. Scanteak Park Mall 48 Hour Makeover
01 March 2012
Scanteak is participating in this year’s SingaPlural – Singapore Furniture Design Week!
From 7th to 11th March 2012, our showroom at Park Mall (#03-02) will be undergoing a 48-hour makeover as part of SingaPlural’s Design-Larger-Than-Life competition. Students from Temasek Polytechnic (TP) will be in charge of giving our showroom a brand new look to go with the theme “Love, Think, Design, Green”. The team, made up of students selected from different fields of Design, have at least 30% of our showroom to work with, so everyone is invited to come and view their showcase!
Temasek Polytechnic is among the five design schools selected for this competition. Each school will be partnered with an industry retailer, and is given a funding of $2,000 for the project. Not only for showcasing and encouraging local talent, the competition is also aimed at developing an understanding of furniture design with reference to the environment and its sustainability. Another objective is to introduce and encourage “Green & Eco” designs.
SingaPlural is a design trail featuring the best of local design, and is held in conjunction with the International Furniture Fair Singapore 2012/29th ASEAN Furniture Show (IFFS/AFS 2012). Co-organisers include the Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC), International Furniture Fair Singapore Pte Ltd (IFFS). Other supporters include International Enterprise Singapore, SPRING Singapore, Singapore Exhibition and Convention Bureau and Singapore Tourism Board (STB).
